It's vital for national security and our standard of living that we have a stable energy supply. Solar and wind, while sustainable, are sometimes unreliable. To ensure a steady source of power, the federal government has mandated that coal and nuclear energy producers will not fall below 70% of capacity. On a sunny, windy day, solar panels and wind turbines will actually be disabled so that coal and nuclear can maintain their minimum production without overloading the national grid. Rather than disabling green energy sources, microgrids can store the power for later use, or productively expend the energy instead of committing it to the public power system.
